A session of meetings of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been held this week in Vienna, in preparation of the 68th General Conference (16-20 September).
The Board has been called to deliberate on several sensitive nuclear issues: from the evolving situation in Iran to the safety and security of nuclear power plants in Ukraine (first and foremost Zaporizhzhia) and to the DPRK’s nuclear programme. Extremely relevant, in the current context of tension and humanitarian crisis, has also been the discussion on the Middle East.
The IAEA’s activities of research, development, training and assistance in the field of nuclear technologies and applications, in support of and in collaboration with Member States, have also been at the centre of attention. Among these, particularly noteworthy are the initiatives promoting food security and sustainable agriculture as well as the advancements in fusion energy, also with reference to the World Fusion Energy Group, that will be launched in Rome in November with an inaugural high-level event, co-organized by the Italian Government and the IAEA.
Ambassador Debora Lepre, Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, has reiterated in her statements Italy’s strong commitment to supporting the IAEA’s activities and key role for security, non-proliferation and the promotion of peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
