On Monday 23 September, Italy participated as a full member in the meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), represented by Ambassador Debora Lepre. Italy was re-elected to the Board during the 68th General Conference of the Agency, held from 16 to 20 September. Our country had not sat on the restricted political body of the IAEA since 2020 (in which it participated as an observer country).
Italy’s return to the Board is a recognition of our constant commitment to nuclear safety and security and non-proliferation, as well as to the promotion of the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technologies. Italy is one of the main financial and technical partners of the Agency, both for the importance of its economic contributions and for that of the technical-scientific relations that grow and are renewed year after year (the latest, in chronological order, is the agreement signed between the IAEA and the Polytechnic University of Milan).
In her speech, Ambassador Lepre asserted the role of Italy, thanking the Member States for the trust granted and reiterating our country’s commitment to work with dedication for peace, security, sustainable development, health and the energy transition.
