On 5 September, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, had a telephone conversation with Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reaffirming Italy’s full support to the IAEA’s role in ensuring global nuclear security.
In particular, with reference to the situation in Iran, Tajani emphasized the need for Teheran to resume a full cooperation with the Agency, including access to nuclear sites, and he confirmed that Italy is ready to facilitate the dialogue.
On Ukraine the Minister reiterated the necessity to involve Kiev in the discussions on nuclear safety and security in the country. “Zaporizhzhia power plant – he addes – can serve as a model in the negotiating process that we hope might lead to peace”.
