On Tuesday, June 2, celebrations for the Italian National Day were held in Vienna at Metternich Palace, jointly organized by the Embassy of Italy, the Permanent Mission to the International Organizations, and the Permanent Mission to the OSCE.

The celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic, attended by numerous representatives from institutional, diplomatic, academic circles and the International Organizations based in Vienna, provided an opportunity to commemorate the democratic choice affirmed by the referendum of June 2, 1946, reaffirm Italy’s commitment at the international level in support of peace, development, and human rights, and honour the excellent bilateral relations with the Republic of Austria.

In her welcoming address, Ambassador Debora Lepre, Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, highlighted Italy’s ongoing commitment within the United Nations framework, aimed at making the multilateral system more effective in addressing today’s global challenges: “Multilateralism is not an abstract principle: it is a necessity. The international community needs credible institutions capable of promoting dialogue, mediation, and collective action.” The Ambassador also paid tribute to the work of the many Italian officials serving in Vienna’s international organizations, who carry out their duties with dedication and professionalism.
