The UNODC World Drug Report 2026, the United Nations’ most authoritative report on the global drug phenomenon, was presented in Vienna on 26 June.
The Report highlights how illicit drug markets are becoming increasingly complex, rapidly adapting to technological developments, geopolitical tensions, and evolving patterns of demand. In 2024, an estimated 331 million people used drugs, representing a 34% increase compared to ten years ago. Record levels of cocaine production, the growing spread of synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances, and the use of new trafficking routes and technological tools by criminal organizations to evade controls are among the key trends identified.
The Report also draws attention to public health risks, the continuing inadequacy of access to treatment services, and the particular vulnerability of young people.
Speaking on behalf of Italy, Ambassador Debora Lepre reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to a comprehensive, evidence-based approach that integrates prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and efforts to combat drug trafficking.
