Vienna, 9 May 2018. With the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding on the Project entitled “Agro-technology development for economic growth in South and Central Somalia” Italy allocates 3 million euro, thereby confirming its commitment to promoting the economic development of Somalia. The aim of the Project, managed by UNIDO in collaboration with the Somalian Ministry of Trade and Industry, is to support the agro-industrial sector, fostering the development of local businesses with modern technologies that can increase the competitiveness of Somalian products and guarantee access to regional and global markets.
On the occasion of the signing ceremony of the Memorandum, the Permanent Representative of Italy to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Maria Assunta Accili Sabbatini, stated that “Italy is determined to continue its cooperation with UNIDO and Somalia in order to strengthen the business environment and create opportunities in the Somalian agro-industrial sector”. Ambassador Accili also pointed out that this initiative is in line with the Project started in 2016 with the aim of promoting vocational training in South and Central Somalia in order to increase youth employment.
The Director General of UNIDO, Li Yong, thanked Italy for its continuous support to the initiatives of the Organization, in particular in the African Region, acknowledging the role of primary importance played by our country as a partner State.
