The ongoing 67th session of Commission on Narcotic Drugs, is a political body composed by 53 Member States rotating members, and of which Italy has been a member continuously since 1976.
The CND meets annually with the aim of proposing recommendations on the implementation of the three UN drug conventions, updating the tables of substances under international control and directing global policies on Drugs.
This year the session was opened by a high-level segment, called to adopt a medium-term review of international political commitments on drugs, also in light of the evolution of markets, the production capacities of new synthetic drugs, the growing power of drug traffickers and therefore the need to implement policies of prevention and fight against drugs on a broader spectrum.
The US Secretary of State Blinken, the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Johansson, the Vice-President of Bolivia Choquehuanca and 30 other ministers (Canada, United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium, Albania, Ghana, South Africa, Colombia and Ecuador among others, have participated in the High Level Segment.
Ample time has been dedicated to the issue of preventing and combating the spread of Fentanyl and other new and increasingly powerful synthetic narcotic substances. The United States, which has been facing a real epidemic of deaths from Fentanyl for years, leads a Global Coalition to combat synthetic drugs. The issue is also at the center of attention of the Italian Government, which has adopted a prevention plan which has been brought to the attention of the CND by Undersecretary Mantovano, head of the Italian delegation.
