On the occasion of the 58th session of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), currently ongoing in Vienna, a side event on “Empowering Women in Global Digital Trade” has taken place.
The event was opened by Italy’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Debora Lepre, and Secretary of UNCITRAL, Anna Joubin-Bret. It provided a platform for discussing the role of women in the global digital economy and the urgent need to address the digital gender gap. Speakers emphasised that, while technology can be a valuable accelerator of development, it can also exacerbate existing inequalities if not designed inclusively, thereby reinforcing gender biases instead of reducing them. The importance of the ethical and transparent governance of artificial intelligence was also highlighted. Among the legal experts participating in the roundtable discussion was Rita Caracuzzo, the Italian delegate to the UNCITRAL session, who focused on the potential benefits and risks of AI.
