The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Giorgio Silli, led the Italian delegation to the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), taking place in Vienna from 15 to 19 September.

During Italy’s national statement, Undersecretary Silli stressed that only a diplomatic solution to the Iranian dossier can ensure lasting stability in the region, reaffirming Italy’s readiness to facilitate dialogue. Attention was also drawn to the nuclear safety risks stemming from the Russian aggression against Ukraine, with specific reference to Russia’s unlawful presence at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The Undersecretary further recalled the IAEA’s contribution to the reconstruction of Ukraine, including the agreement signed between the Agency and Ukraine during the Ukraine Recovery Conference held in Rome last July. He also condemned the continued illegal development of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes, and expressed hope for a resolution of the Syrian dossier.

During his visit, Undersecretary Silli held a meeting with Director General Grossi, focusing on the growing technical and scientific cooperation between Italy and the Agency. He also inaugurated the Italian exhibition pavilion, attended by numerous Italian officials and researchers working with the Agency.

“The synergy between public bodies, research institutes, universities and industry has created in Italy a favourable environment for innovation, making our country an international reference point for research and development in such a critical and fast-evolving sector as nuclear technology for sustainable development,” concluded Undersecretary Silli at the ceremony marking the designation of Policlinico Gemelli as the fifth Italian IAEA Collaborating Centre.

Undersecretary Silli also took part in the inauguration of the Agency’s new Visitors’ Centre.
