Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio participated, as Head of the Italian delegation, in the Fifteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, currently taking place in Abu Dhabi and bringing together numerous Ministers of Justice and high-level representatives from around the world.<\/p>\n
At the opening of the Congress, the Abu Dhabi Declaration was adopted, setting out a pragmatic and action-oriented agenda aimed at translating commitments into concrete results, strengthening the rule of law and enhancing international cooperation in response to increasingly transnational and technologically sophisticated forms of crime.<\/p>\n
In his plenary statement, Minister Nordio stressed that the issues at the heart of the Congress are fully aligned with the Italian Government\u2019s priorities in the areas of prevention, people-centred justice and international cooperation in the fight against organized crime and terrorism. He also recalled Italy\u2019s long-standing experience in combating organized crime and the legacy of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, highlighting Italy\u2019s historic role in shaping the international response to transnational organized crime, as reflected in the United Nations Convention that bears the name of the city of Palermo, whose full implementation remains a key priority.<\/p>\n
The Minister also stressed the need to keep pace with evolving criminal threats linked to artificial intelligence, crypto-assets and online fraud, noting that the traditional principle of \u201cfollow the money\u201d must now be complemented by \u201cfollow the data\u201d, in full respect of the law, safeguards and fundamental rights.<\/p>\n
At the conclusion of his statement, the Minister announced Italy\u2019s commitment to contributing to the further development of INTERPOL\u2019s \u201cSilver Notice\u201d model for tracing and recovering the proceeds of crime, as well as to promoting approaches to the seizure, confiscation and social reuse of confiscated assets, areas in which the Italian legal system has developed particularly advanced tools.<\/p>\n
