Ladies and Gentlemen,
Since the establishment of the Republic of Italy multilateralism has been the reference framework of Italian foreign policy. This is all the more true here in Vienna where we, International Organizations and Member States, have worked together to make sure that our common goals could become goals of the sustainable development agenda. All the Agencies present in Vienna have made their own contribution thanks to the efforts of us all.
I would like to stress the importance of this team play. Institutions are wiser than human beings, because they can avail themselves of the experience of several generations and of people with different backgrounds, who represent a source of constant enrichment.
The global challenges we deal with in Vienna cannot be tackled by single States in isolation, they demand a strong international
collaboration. Promoting such cooperation, through the creation of new instruments and the strengthening of the existing ones, is the most remarkable achievement we have reached together.
I should like to take this opportunity – this also being my last Italian National Day in Vienna – to thank you all, colleagues and
international officials, be they Italian and of every nationality, with whom I worked during these years.
For my part, I have tried to make my personal contribution to this common endeavour, which makes me particularly proud.
