Message by Ambassador Alessandro Cortese on the occasion of the National Day of Italy

Like last year, unfortunately the pandemic has taken away from us the pleasure of gathering for the celebration of the Italian National Day, on June 2nd.

Today, we celebrate 75 years since the birth of the Italian Republic following the institutional referendum of June 2nd 1946. On that day, Italian citizens - and for the first time also with the vote of women - chose the Republic as their form of State, voting to affirm the value of freedom and equal dignity of every person as the basis of our democracy.

To celebrate this important anniversary, the Permanent Mission of Italy to the International Organizations, the Embassy of Italy in Vienna and the Italian Delegation to the OSCE have put together a joint virtual event with the collaboration of the Italian Cultural Institute.

I hope that you will enjoy the videos that we have created specifically for this occasion and, above all, that they will entertain you and introduce you to various aspects of our wonderful Country and Culture.

Here below you will find links to a recording of our national anthem by Goffredo Mameli conducted by M° Riccardo Muti; to the speeches of the three Italian Ambassadors in Vienna; to the music and dance performance Interludio per un giorno di festa, with the Wiener Staatsballett corps dancer Elena Bottaro and the renowned gambistress Maddalena Del Gobbo, filmed in the premises of the Italian Embassy; to the original audiovisual performance Intervallo dedicated to Italy and created by the two Italian artists Martux_m and Mattia Casalegno; and finally to the evocative musical project Gratia - Improvvisazioni e riletture contemporanee sulle Antifone Mariane, which links ancient sacred music - performed by the Sonus Vocum Ensemble - with contemporary jazz through the virtuosity of Enzo Pietropaoli (double bass), Gabriele Mirabassi (clarinet) and Michele Rabbia (percussion). This last performance is part of the project Vivere all’italiana in musica, a collection of 20 concerts, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
